CEDAR SHINGLE SIDING
How toapply Cedar Shingle Siding (with or without rain screen:)
Rule # 1 stain your shingles first
Cedar shingles make an attractive siding.. first prep your wall with
your sheathing paper and do your wall openings as shown in moisture barrier.
Note:
if you use number 1 grade roofing shingles... you do not need to use a
rain screen application.. the shingles can be put directly over the
house wrap moisture barrier... if you are using number 2 grade shingles
they must be applied over a rain screen system... When I use number two
shingles I cover the rain screen furring with a sheet of 1/2"
plywood... this gives me a solid nailing surface again... throw on a
single layer of paper and start shingling
Start with
a 1" by (your choice) of trim...above picture you will see I used a
belly
board... it is a good idea to put flashing on the top of this board..
the first layer of shingles is a starter row and basically sets the
profile for the shingle and also provides that extra layer of
protection... now if you used flashing you should start your starter
row about 1/2' up from the flashing use a spacer resting on the
flashing and attach the shingles..the gap 6 mm between each shingle
offset from the row below by 40
By code: (Check with local authority) 400 size...190 exposure, 450
size..216 exposure...600 size...292 exposure ...
I
like to use an 18" shingle and a 7" exposure this gives me almost three
layers
of shingles at my nailing point (1and3/4" galvi roofing nail)
25
minimum above exposure line and 20 from edge...wide shingles pop
another nail in the middle
The first row over the starter course butts should be even... gap
offset by 40 (1 1/12')
Take note: if you are not using flashing ... overlap the finish below
Once
the starter row and then the first row are up... nail a 1x4 at 175 (7")
above the butt of the row below... and use this to rest the shingle
butts on ..continue to top
When you come to window or door butt the shingle snug to jamb... over
top of openings keep 1/2" above flashing
Top of wall at soffit cut shingle to fit snug to soffit "J"
Out
side corners no trim leave the shingles running wild at least 1 1/2"
(38) when you do the adjoining wall inter weave the corner with a
hatchet... butt starter course and first course tight against the wild
side and trim using the shingle surface as a guide nail
shingle
running wild using the shingle as a guide pain stakingly
carefully scribe and cut each shingle to fit
or
start your
corner with a piece 1x2 nailed plumb in place and butt
your shingles snuggly to it.. them when finished nail your
corner
trim to lap shingles
