CONCRETE-DEFECTS

Defects
slabs
Slab cracks
crazing
and map cracking
-often caused by hot
weather setting up the
concrete too quickly
-improper
curing
-improper
reshoring
-cracks
form from inside corners of columns and
walls the weak point of the slabs
prevention...
-groove
or saw before concrete cures around columns and
every 15 meters
-insure
slow curing during warm weather, by ponding or covering with wet burlap
or by spraying with a sealer
dusting
-too
much water at surface
-drying with fossil fuels
and improper
ventilation cause the carbon dioxide to mix with the calcium hydroxide forming calcium carbonate
to form as a weak top layer
prevention
-do not over work
concrete bringing too much water to surface
-when heating in
a hoarded situation make sure that there is a fresh air supply
scaling
caused
by trowelling before bleed water is gone
-or
chemical deicers
-excessive bleeding from
side of form
spalling
caused
by premature stripping and improper
stripping techniques
voids
-voids
beneath bucks and blockouts
- fill under bucks
from one side if filled from both sides voids are usually formed
Wall
air
pockets
Caused when feeding
concrete around window(blockouts) bucks...
prevention...feed
concrete when pouring from one side only and vibrate through
until full on other side
efflorescence
white crystalline growth
caused by chemicals in
mix sweep it away no real cure
honeycomb
coarse
aggregates and air spaces often caused by
over vibration on a poor
seam bleeding or not vibrating enough
prevention
-vibrator must extend at
least 150 into
previous lift 5 seconds
-make sure all seams are tight and all corners are well cornered locked
