MOISTURE-BARRIER
..HOUSE
WRAP AND RAIN SCREEN
AIR BARRIER AS AN EXTERIOR APPLICATION 1 SHEET NO JOINS
Rule one every thing is lapped shingle style water flows over not under.
Every
house has three layers of protection the MOISTURE-BARRIER is the 30
minute paper or the house wrap.. the job of the MOISTURE-BARRIER is to
keep driven rain, snow, fog,... any moisture from entering the wall
cavity.. in the picture above, we have built a platform
beside
the house and are prefabbing the walls... we have used two
layers
of 30 minute paper... the bottom edge has a bug screen and we have
placed our rain screen strapping at 16" centres. When placing the paper
we start with two full strips and them the next strip is half way up.
We continue this to the top...note at the top we have left enough paper
to lap the top plates ... the spaces without rain screen strapping are
window openings..for window wrap see moisture-barrier

The
moisture barrier rain screen strapping is used in high rain fall areas
mandatory by code
... the concept is that it promotes drying of the inner wall.. by
allowing air movement and water bead drainage.. only mandatory in wet
areas of the country
When laying out the paper allow for any
vertical edge overlaps to be 12" and when you come to a corner lap both
directions to give a four layer cover at corners out side corners are
quite easy to bend and keep nice but inside corners can be a
little tougher take the time and make sure the creases are tight to the
corner.. if not the cladding will not sit flat... see at far end (top
picture) above
the 12" overlap left on and note at the close end no furring strip...
these are placed once wall is erected
When rain screening over
the MOISTURE-BARRIER paper such as above I use a minimum number of
staples... the
strapping holds the paper in position... if the plywood is 1/2" or
thicker the furring can be nailed directly to it.. for the plywood is
thick enough to hold the fasteners used on the cladding
but ... it is a simple matter to line the furring over the studs and
nail
it
straight through into them... just check the bottom plate for the nail
positions of the stud lay it out and nail it on 6 nails is plenty...
your siding fasteners will also penetrate right through and you will
have a nail every 7 or so inches
 .
 When placing exhaust
ports ...electrical boxes any through wall
elements
use
a piece of rubber roofing membrane and cut the opening smaller then the
required size push it through the membrane from the back side so it is
a tight fit ... with membrane buckled slightly outward... now this
membrane is interwoven with MOISTURE-BARRIER building paper
shingle style... bottom edge
of membrane must tuck over paper below

THE BLUE LINES ARE ABOUT 1/4" AND 1/2 " BEND UP AT 1/2" MARK AND FOLD
BACK DOWN AT 1/4" MARK
